Day 100: Ascending the Aligator

WOO-HOOOOOO! I finally reached 100!

As a way of celebrating 100 doodles, this doodle is based off a short story sent in by one of my readers. A while back I had a contest "What's Your Story?" that encouraged readers to send in their best stories and I in return would interpret it with my doodle. The winner of best story is from Kerry:

"Last year while vacationing with friends, their son kept calling the elevator on the Disney Magic Ship an alligator. The term stuck and we all now say we are going to ride the alligator!" -Kerry

WHERE'D I GO!?

Not to worry, I'm still here. The past few days I've been confined to my bed as I'm recovering from a nasty flu. Yeck!

The Doodler will be back shortly. For now here's a video from one of my favorite artists, Stefan Bucher! You can check out his work at: http://344design.typepad.com/344_loves_you/

Day 91: My Wife :)

I've been so proud of Bryce as of late. She is student teaching this semester and it hasn't been easy (BY ANY MEANS!), but in her challenge she has found motivation and HAS NOT QUIT!

What I love most about Bryce is her ability to brighten up a room. It's a beautiful blessing from God, and I have the awesome privilege as her husband to see her grow in this gift.

Day 90: Rah Rah Rabbit Race!

I doodled this for my wife's Spanish class. She needed to give one of her activities some spunk! Have a young one? Here's a bigger version that you can print out :)

Work In Progress

As mentioned earlier, I was given an opportunity to do some illustrations for a children's book. Pictured above are some storyboards of the first couple of pages. The book is about the subject of divorce so somehow I have to keep it serious yet fun ... pretty challenging! Right now I'm mostly concerned with developing a theme that will carry itself through the book. This can be done through color, shapes, angles... the creative solutions are endless!

I was running out of time today but really wanted to post something, so I grabbed this from an old sketch book I had in college. A lot of my doodles end up looking better after color is added.

Day 81: What Is A "Puppy-Cow" ?

Recently my friend Scott emailed me a request to doodle a "Puppy-Cow".

What is a "Puppy-Cow" ? Scott goes on to explain...

"My girlfriend's 2 year old is obsessed with this thing called a Puppy-Cow. she is not afraid of anything, but this thing call a Puppy-Cow... every time she hears a noise that she doesn't know she says "its probably a Puppy-Cow". well I thought it would be cute to make her a little doddle of a Puppy-Cow and then frame it and put it on the wall.

Well, hopefully my pen found the right guy. Here's day 81 with the "Puppy-Cow"!

An Exciting New Project

I was recently approached by a local children's book author to do some illustration work. I can't say much about the book, but what I can say is that it's going to make a difference. I'm very excited to be on board with this project and I'll be sure to post more about it as things progress. Above is the layout. I needed to see the whole story, so I taped it up like a storyboard. It really helps to stand back and see things from a bird's eye view.

Day 77: From The Sketchbook

I had some time this evening to some gesture drawings. My wife and I own three rabbits: BB, Zoe, and Charlie. Cute, but work!

Gesture drawing can be fun and very challenging, especially when drawing anything that wants to move every 3 seconds! The beauty of the challenge is that it helps you grow as an artist. You can't erase, you simply draw what you see. It's a great warm up and highly recommended if you want to improve. It also captures the energy of the subject which I think is the best reason to do it.

Day 76: One Heck Of A Hill Of Beans

A little history lesson:

"The mundane bean has for at least eight centuries been regarded as the epitome of worthlessness. Even if you know how many beans make five you are unlikely to consider any one of them to be valuable. Part of the strength of the fairy tale of Jack and the Beanstalk is the contrast between the valueless beans Jack was given in exchange for the cow and the riches revealed by the full-grown beanstalk."

Day 63: TGIF and for everything else

Yesterday proved to be a life changing moment. After a challenging morning, my wife Bryce and I sat on our living room couch exhausted. Every moment had been an obstacle, so the sudden break from trauma gave us a minute to reflect. Looking around the room we began to see things differently. Just about everything in our living room was a gift given to us, a bargain, or handmade. The couch, the TV, the table, decorations, books...we began to realize how blessed we are. The cool thing is, there's even more outside of our four walls.

What are you thankful for?

Day 62: Stimulus Shopping Spree!

Normally I don't draw political cartoons (mainly because I'm not THAT into politics), but I feel rather strong about the Stimulus plan being passed. What are your thoughts? My friend Dave Hartland wrote a good blog post about this. Read his post here
